Colorado Youth Leadership Network

CYLN was formed in 2006 with the goal of connecting youth and adults around Colorado who are interested in youth leadership. More specifically, the network is committed to creating a state-wide resource bank and identifying all of the fine youth leadership efforts and opportunities taking place around the state.

The Colorado Youth Leadership Network promotes youth leadership in Colorado by providing opportunities and tools for learning, sharing, collaboration and advocacy among young leaders, educators and youth development professionals.

The ongoing efforts of CYLN are geared toward providing the following anticipated products and services:

·    Annual reports on the state of youth leadership opportunity in Colorado;

·    Youth Leadership Opportunity Self-Assessment Tool for communities to assess their

     own level of support for youth leadership;

·    Issue and policy briefs, research summaries, case studies, newsletters, how-to

     guides for adults and youth, and other resources as determined by CYLN members

     and leadership;

·    A report illustrating how high-quality leadership education aligns with Colorado

     General Workplace Competencies and Colorado Model Content Standards for Civics;

·    Colorado Youth Leadership Content and Performance Standards;

·    Colorado Program Standards for Leadership Education;

·    Colorado Youth Leadership Clearinghouse containing leadership and related

     materials developed by Coloradoans;

·    Conferences, training and technical assistance sponsored and/or provided by

     network members;

·    Annual Colorado Youth Leadership Conference;

One of the first steps of the network was to create a definition of youth leadership, a definition of youth leadership experiences, best practices criteria, and a method for identifying programs and organizations that fulfill those criteria.

Defining Youth Leadership

Youth – those aged 5-24.

Leadership – a broad concept referring to the knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors used by individuals or groups to influence, motivate, inspire and create cooperative action with others.

Defining Youth Leadership Experiences

Youth Leadership Programs, Opportunities and Events that support youth leadership development and are based on a vision that is well-defined and clearly communicated about how they serve and meaningfully involve youth in leadership development opportunities. They are also aimed at preparing youth for everyday contributions as current and future citizen leaders.
