Youthleadership.com is a site
dedicated to providing current,
creative, and dynamic youth leadership
education information; and serving as a
resource clearinghouse for individuals
who work with youth leaders. Through my
years of experience working with youth
and adults in the leadership education
field, I believe youth leaders deserve
the same energy, preparation, and
celebration as leaders in business,
politics, education, and communities.
I'm constantly looking for the best and
most timely resources to help inform and
educate adults who work with youth
leaders, parents, kids and teens
interested in leadership.
The site
emphasizes a developmental approach,
with young leaders being recognized as
important resources and supported to
take on significant roles as leaders
within schools, organizations,
communities, etc. This approach values creating opportunities for youth to
learn leadership skills without having
to be perfect leaders (after all, name a
perfect adult leader!).
We all
realize it's essential for youth
leadership educators to create an
environment and attitude that provides
for learning from mistakes and
acknowledges that all leaders confront
obstacles along the way. Ultimately,
someone or something is there to help
youth learn from a situation and move on
stronger and more competent as a leader.
Take time to share your experiences and
explore additional ways to prepare youth
leaders for their present and future!
This
site is run by Mariam G.
MacGregor
and isn't affiliated with any one
specific educational, political, or
religious organization. The efforts are
dedicated to providing, in a neutral
format, a comprehensive center to access
current youth leadership information.
Her book,
Building Everyday Leadership: Promoting
Attitudes and Actions for Respect and
Success (for adult
facilitators), and the companion teen
book,
Everyday Leadership: Attitudes and
Actions for Respect and Success
(Free Spirit Publishing, 2007)
provide an organized curriculum for
teaching leadership to teens. Her book,
Teambuilding
with Teens: Activities for Leadership,
Decision Making and Group Success
(Free Spirit Publishing, 2008)
is a compilation of 36 activities to
use with teen leaders or for teen
leaders to use when mentoring others.
All of these resources are available
from Free Spirit at
www.freespirit.com.
Mariam was a contributing author to the
leadership-based middle school
curriculum of the Girl Scouts USA. This
new curriculum is set to roll out in
2008. She has written articles on youth
leadership for various publications and
published the widely-used program
development guidebook titled
Designing Student Leadership
Programs: Transforming the Leadership
Potential of Youth,
which is available for
purchase by

Materials" icon.
Mariam worked with college student
leaders at Syracuse University, Santa
Clara University and Metropolitan State
College of Denver. She left the
college setting to use the “best-learned
practices” from higher education to
create more sophisticated and innovative
approaches in leadership development
with adolescent leaders. Mariam served
as a school counselor and coordinator of
leadership programs at an alternative
high school outside of Denver, CO. While
there, she received honorable mention
for "Counselor of the Year."
Over the past 17 years, Mariam has
consulted with a number of organizations
and presented workshops to diverse
audiences with an emphasis on designing
meaningful and sustainable youth
leadership experiences in both school-
and community-based settings. She is
available for program consultation and
youth and/or adult trainings.
Mariam also offers
one-to-one advising and assistance for individuals seeking to
enhance their leadership image from the inside-out.
This service is ideal for individuals,
particularly young adults, who find themselves in a
high profile positions without preparation to take
on the leadership responsibility associated with
these roles.
